The WORLD in our backyard !

The International Seafarers’ Center Port-as-Classroom Program is a project in performance-based,
multi-cultural education for middle school students.

Initially we will be partnering with two Glynn County Middle Schools to bring the “port” into the classroom. As a result of their interaction with seafarers from around the world, students will learn geography, interview skills, writing and publication, and the art of storytelling. Other benefits will include exposure to other cultures, economies, and languages to children who may never travel far from Brunswick, GA.

Look for the students’ (and seafarers’) story when it is rolled out to the Brunswick Community. Awareness of those who visit the Port of Brunswick will be an invaluable experience for all!

The International Seafarers' Center provides free clothing to all seafarers and we are in constant need of the following items:

men’s used T-shirts (any color)
men’s ball caps
travel or regular size:

lotions
shampoo
conditioner
soap

men’s razors and shaving cream
deodorant
used bicycles (men or women)

These items may be dropped off at our center -- 307 Newcastle St., Brunswick or if you need us to pick up a bicycle, call us at 267-0631. Our office hours are 10-4 Monday thru Friday.

TOURS OF THE GOLDEN ISLES

As residents of the Golden Isles we know of the beauty, history and points of interest of our home. We take them for granted, knowing we live in a beautiful area. The seafarers that visit our area have few opportunities to escape the busy routines of a ship-in-port. And, increasingly in the midst of a global recession, vessels – especially car carriers - discharge or load smaller “packages” of cargo. They may spend as little as three or four hours in port then leave, anchor outside the port to avoid dockage fees and return when there is something else to load or they obtain a new charter.

Hence, the Center’s new plan to offer self-guided bicycle tours of Old Town Brunswick and guided van tours of St. Simons and Jekyll islands. An opportunity for mariners to experience more than just the port and, perhaps, the “rec” room at one of the Seafarers’ Center’s facilities.

Seafarers will have the opportunity to experience the charming Old Town Brunswick with its Victorian architecture, the waterfront and local restaurants, shops, art galleries and antique dealers. The seafarers will be able to visit local landmarks, such as the Old City Hall, the Ritz Theatre, the Liberty Ship Memorial, the Glynn County Courthouse, Glynn Academy and small parks known as “squares”. St. Simons and Jekyll islands also boast historic structures, as well as beaches and marsh views, truly making Brunswick the “Gateway to the Golden Isles”.

These new initiatives add another facet to the spectrum of services at the Seafarers’ Center, making seafarers from around the globe feel welcome and anxious to return.

NATIONAL MARITIME DAY

National Maritime Day is a little known holiday celebrated on May 22 in honor of those seamen who lost their lives at sea. National Maritime Day is a United States holiday created to recognize the maritime industry. The holiday was created by the United States Congress on May 20, 1933, to be celebrated on the date that the American steamship S.S. Savannah set sail from Savannah, Georgia on the first ever transoceanic voyage under steam power.

Due to weather, Maritime Day was celebrated in Brunswick, Georgia on May 28, 2009. A wreath was placed at sea to honor merchant sailors who lost their life at sea during World War I. A small delegation that consisted of members of local maritime organizations went to sea in order to honor the sailors. U.S. Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer John Cowden placed a wreath decorated with red, white and purple flowers and red, white and blue ribbons into the ocean. This was the first year the ceremony was done at sea. In other years, a wreath was thrown off the pier, but this year it was thrown at five miles out at sea so the tides would take it farther out.

A Navy veteran himself, Tom Sanborne was the International Seafarers’ Center’s representative for the Maritime Day ceremony. “The ceremony is important to the community. There are a lot of retired Navy veterans in the area and a ceremony like this should be given more recognition and coverage.”
