Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War multiplayer reveal details new maps and game modes

By Sean Carey,
Treyarch has detailed what we can expect from Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War's multiplayer. A new action-packed trailer filled with explosions, vehicles and more explosions gives us a small taste of what to expect.

During a special reveal live stream, multiplayer director David Vonderhaar revealed Deniable Operations. A mode that lies at "the heart of multiplayer, raising the bar while creating a clear and unique narrative that influences every bit of our multiplayer." Players will journey to locations such as the Angolan desert, the frozen lakes of Uzbekistan, South Beach in Miami, the open waters of the North Atlantic and the heart of the U.S.S.R. "Deniable Ops are the black ops stories inspired by history, but forgotten by the history books," says Vonderhaar.

The reveal also gave us a look at some of the map in Black Ops Cold War. Satellite is a larger map that features a crashed satellite in the centre. Armada is based in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, where players can utilise ziplines and gunboats to move from ship to ship. In Crossroads, players can use tanks to blow up enemy positions or jump on the back of snowmobiles to get behind enemy lines. Miami takes place on the confined streets of Miami, complete with neon lights, while the Moscow map has players fighting both aboveground and underground in a metro station.

Black Ops Cold War multiplayer cross-gen

Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War sees the return of classic multiplayer game modes and introduces some new ones. Team Deathmatch, Search & Destroy, Domination, and Kill Confirmed all return, alongside VIP Escort, Combined Arms, Fireteam, and Control from Black Ops 4.

VIP Escort is a new 6v6 game mode where teams must either protect or kill a randomly selected player who becomes a VIP. Combined Arms is a 12v12 battle that features vehicles and is a "larger-scale mode." Fireteam is a new 40-player multiplayer mode which allows for up to 10 teams of four. The first Fireteam game mode is called "Dirty Bomb". Treyarch will be sharing more on Dirty Bomb closer to launch.

Treyarch has also confirmed that players will be able to play Black Ops Cold War together, regardless of platform or console generation thanks to cross-play and cross-gen support. Cross-progression also means that players will keep their profile, statistics, and progression if they switch between platforms, thanks to their Activision accounts.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War launches on November 13th.
