DRESSNER’S VILLAGE CAFE
KEEPS ROLLING ALONG
TO THE DELIGHT OF ISLANDERS AND TOURISTS

by Mirim Perrone

When Rhonda Gulley became the owner of Dresser’s Café in 2005, a village resident remarked, “She’s not buying a restaurant, she’s buying an institution.” No truer words were ever spoken. Under the former owners Bob and Mary Dressner, a reputation for excellent food and fair prices was firmly established. Rhonda has managed to continue that tradition, Open from 7:30 to 2:30 on week-days and from 8 a.m. to 2: 30 on week-ends, the customers are always waiting. They are eager to enjoy a breakfast treat with the famous golden pancakes offered for $1.99 for one, $3.49 for two, and 3.99 for three.

Yes, I am one of those steady customers and I know that if I don’t want the pancakes for breakfast I can have French toast, or a Belgian waffle with toasted oatmeal & pecan or fruit topping, and the always available eggs and omelets. All egg plates include a choice of home fried potatoes or grits, English muffin, toast, or a biscuit. Bob’s Best Burger is on the menu for lunch and is still the best burger! The hamburger meat is fresh on a grilled bum topped with lettuce, tomato, onions, and mayonnaise. Price is $5.99. Adding chili and cheese, , mushrooms and cheese, , or bacon and cheese. brings the price up to$ 6.99. Order fish for lunch and you get the grouper, blackened or grilled. I recommend the grilled, and love t he crusty roll it’s served on with lettuce, tomato, and Rhonda’s own dressing. Owner Rhonda tells me that her addition of Mexican Pita or Chicken Quesadilla featured as “A Complete Meal On A Plate” takes you on a tasty trip south of the border, and is one of the most popular items. The luncheon menu also offers soup, chili, hot and cold sandwiches.

There is another plus for this favorite café. It is staff. From the chef who fills your order to the staff that brings your delectable selection there is courtesy and an eagerness to answer any request. Who knows? Maybe civility and fair prices are returning. At least they are at Dressner’s Village Café.
